Why You Need a Coach to Grow Your Coaching Business
One of the important things to do for your coaching business is to hire a coach. This is because a coach has a great positive effect on the success of your coaching business.
Borrowing the words of Jay Abraham, “I don’t get! What’s with coaches who don’t have a coach?” Well, I don’t also get it. If you’re a coach and you don’t have a coach helping you grow your business, you are doing yourself a great disservice.
I must confess, this is one of the scariest issues to deal with. Some folks see coaches coaching other coaches as a weird pyramid scheme. This mindset is limiting. And this is what holds most coaches back from getting the help they need.
When I started out in business, one of the things that helped me scale pretty fast was hiring a business coach. It was difficult to get the one that has the exact solutions I needed, but I got one in the end. Today, I help coaches build their businesses and get clients on a consistent basis. Yet, I still get help in some areas from a coach.
As a coach, you have your strengths and there’s a limit to what you can do. But, building a business requires certain skill sets. In most cases, if not all, you may not have all the skills needed to build your coaching business. This is why you need to hire a coach that has the skills you lack.
So, if you are still not convinced that you need a coach, the following reasons should help you make up your mind.
1. It Opens You Up to Practical Approaches to Running a Coaching Business.
The truth is that to succeed in business, you need much more than the ability to coach. On a good day, you will make a great coach with your coaching skills. But, to grow a coaching business, you need much more. You need more than the things you were taught in a Coaching School (If you attended any).
In one of the online groups I’m a part of, most coaches who had gone to a coaching school shared their career challenges. The challenges they shared hovered around how best to enroll new clients. This included everything from marketing to the dynamics of engaging with prospective clients.
In my query, I realized that all the coaches that complained have not hired a coach. They depended on their coaching abilities. If they had hired a coach, they most likely would have gotten the answers they needed. This is because they would have been exposed to what their coach did to make a difference.
One of the books I’ve read that gave me a lot of insight is The Prosperous Coach by Rich Litvin and Steve Chandler. They made a very strong recommendation for coaches who desire to scale their coaching business. They said, and I quote, “Hire a Coach!”
The process of hiring a coach can be daunting. It could take you talking to so many to know which one works for you. Regardless of what it takes, get yourself a coach.
2. It Makes You a Better Coach
As a coach, you can’t be the best with your input alone. Getting the input of another coach gives you the opportunity to be better. It has the potential to make a positive impact on the way you work, and transform lives every day.
So, hire a coach who has developed themselves over time. Hire one who’s better than you and learn from them. When you hire a coach that is higher than you, you get inspired and enlightened by their actions.
When you see how another coach runs their business, you get fresh ideas on what and what not to incorporate into your coaching business. You learn how they work with their clients; how they lead, and when they follow; what questions they ask and when.
They are not your competition, they are your coaches. It’s okay to copy their methods and integrate into yours – that’s if it makes you better as a coach and in turn, grows your coaching business. Your primary aim is to serve your clients and support them as best as you can. So, copying what another coach is doing that can help your clients and your business is not a bad idea. You don’t have to copy their methods in its entirety. You should add your own ingenuity and give your clients the best experience they can have.
To be frank, there’s no new wisdom in the world. But, you can get old wisdom from people ahead of you and add your flavor to it. It comes out as new wisdom. So, get some old wisdom from a coach and lace it up with your unique flavor to serve your clients as best you can.
3. It Guides You Through Pricing Issues
This is the nightmare of so many coaches. They always find it hard fixing the right prices for their services. Most of the times, they undermine their services with the price they fix. The challenge of overcoming the resistance around charging premium prices, has hampered the growth of most coaching businesses.
If your price is set right, it does a lot of good for your clients and your business.
First, it gets your clients committed to doing the work. When clients pay highly for your services, they do all that is expected of them because they invested a lot in you. And when they put in all effort and commitment to doing the work, they get better results faster. Trust me, this makes you appear like a rock star.
Secondly, it boosts your clients’ confidence knowing they have invested in the best person that can help them get results. For instance, the way you feel when you buy an over-stocked suit you picked up for a couple hundred dollars, won’t be the same way you feel when you wear a $15K Armani suit.
If you want to build your business for instance, how will you feel when you invest in a $10K business coaching program as compared to a $500 business coaching program? The former makes you feel you’ve invested in the best business coaching program that will transform your business, while the latter makes you feel unsure of the results.
Thirdly, it helps you reach your income goals faster. When you charge $3K to $15K per client, and your income goal is $50K per month, all you need is 4 to 15 clients to hit this goal, depending on the price point. And on the flip side, if say you charge $100 per session, you find it more difficult reaching your income goals even with a high number of clients. This, in turn, makes your business more stressful and less fun for you.
Another thing is; when you charge premium prices for your program, you work with fewer clients. This means, you are able to give them the best support in the world. And this in turn enables them to get outstanding results in record time. So, this is a win-win for everyone.
To achieve this, you need to hire a coach. You can’t walk through your pricing issues alone. A coach will guide you to evaluate the value of your services. In addition to other factors that would be considered, you can come up with the best price for your program.
4. It Gives You A Feel of What It’s Like to be a Client
When you hire a coach, you will not only learn marketing and sales strategies. You will also not become better at coaching alone. You get to know how your clients feel when they come to you. You feel the confusion and overwhelm. This helps you understand and empathize with your clients a lot better.
Hiring a coach opened me up to a lot of things about how my clients feel. Some months into one of the coaching programs I enrolled in, I wasn’t seeing the results that made me enroll in the first place. A lot of questions were popping through my head: Is it working? Will I get the value I want? Am I doing it wrong? Will I regret taking part in the program? Has this all been a terrible mistake?
But, when I tried to process the whole thing, I began to write down my worries. I wrote things from where I was to where I am, and to where I hoped to be. I also wrote the actions I needed to have taken. I realized how I had been a hypocrite (don’t give me that sneer). Well, it made me laugh too. I thought to myself, “This is exactly what I ought to tell my clients!”
And this is true for most clients you get. They get confused at some point in the coaching program and worry consumes them. They feel like they are not making progress. They sometimes consider bailing on the coaching program. This is the dilemma most clients face.
When you get the services of a coach, you learn how to manage these kinds of situations when they arise. This is because you’ve been there and have a coach who sees you through it. The processes that made you succeed can be used to help your clients when they go through similar challenges.
5. It Helps You Build Confidence As a Coach
There were fears I used to entertain earlier as a coach: Is coaching even a thing? How can sitting and listening to people and reflecting things and asking questions make such a difference? Why do people pay money for this? Is this a real job?
All of that changed when I employed the services of a coach. He made me see the things I was missing. The things my coach opened my eyes to were so amazing. I saw the results I was helping my clients get, my income was going up, and the positive feedback from my clients. This raised my confidence level. I believed in myself the more.
Sometimes, we need other people to help us see the amount of progress we’ve made. No matter how little they may be, they can help to boost your confidence. And no one does it better than a coach. So get yourself a coach and build your confidence.
